How To Start A Small Worm Farm

How to start a small worm ...

The best location for your Worm Farm should be a well shaded section of your garden. Worms prefer a cold, moist area so open sunshine is a definite no.

Now you have your area set up, your worms will something to eat. Worms are the totally opposite to humans, they will eat most things that we throw away. Old vegetables, fruit peelings, bread, egg shells and general meal waste are great for worm food. The smaller you can make the food, the better. As you know, worms are small creatures so anything big will be difficult for them to digest. They also like soiled paper or cardboard such as torn egg cartons. Worms do not like fish or meat, cheese or butter, generally foods that are oily, very smelly or have strong odours.

You have two options when it comes to the actual worm farm; you can buy one or build one yourself. There are 3 levels to a worm farm, each with holes in the bottom to drain moisture and allow good air flow. Each level should be about 30cm deep, 60cm wide and 90cm long. A suitable covering for the top layer is required to keep out unwanted animals and to keep it dry. A drip tray is needed at the very bottom to catch all the water. A varied amount of compost mixed with wet paper and leaves gives a great bed for the worm farm. Add about 1000 worms once you are happy with the soiled area. Ordinary worms cannot be used, you will need to buy them from your local garden centre. Spread them evenly and allow them to burrow into the soil. Add your kitchen waste in small amounts, always keeping the cover on when finished. Don’t overcrowd the worm farm with food, if they haven’t eaten the previous waste, don’t add more until it’s gone.

After a few days, the worms will have made their way into the top layer leaving their castings in the lower layer. You can use this layer to fertilize your garden. When you remove the compost, simply replace it with fresh soil, cardboard and papers and allow the worms to mix it up again.

how do I start a worm farm?
I am interested in growing worms for gardening and perhaps to sell the waste as fertilizer. I just want to do this on a small scale so I’m looking for info on the amount of space I would need as well as how to care for the worms properly. If anyone has experience in worm farming I’d love to hear from you. Thanks

I already know how to catch worms. It’s just I need more advice other than that…. please help me!
I need to know when to catch worms. I don’t really want to buy them I just need a few to start of with. I just basicially need the fertilizer from the worms so I don’t need that many for my farm. I also need to know a shelter that I can keep them. And the mantainence of these creatures. Anyone know any tecniques to catch these worms? I have tried the wet newspaper trick but it didn’t work. Any other advice?

Potty habits are taught by mommy kitty, and with your comment about sucking on people’s fingers, it tells me she was separated from her mom at too young of age. Therefore she wasn’t properly weaned and taught. That’s why it’s important to leave kittens with their moms and siblings until 12 weeks of age.

    1) It makes me think of this film, but I’m not really certain:
    Children of the Night (1991)
starring Karen Black, Peter DeLuise, Ami Dolenz, Maya McLaughlin, David Sawyer
    IMDb synopsis:
Cindy and Lucy are 18 and going away to college. As a ritual they must rid themselves of the dirt of their hometown of Allburg by swimming in an abandoned church crypt. When Lucy’s crucifix falls into the water and drifts down to land on the head of the ancient vampire Czakyr, he awakens. Some time onwards, Mark, a schoolteacher from a nearby town, gets directed to Allburg to help Lucy and her grandmother, who might be in trouble. Lucy becomes the target of a local turned vampire because of her virgin blood. Mark, Lucy and an old wino hide out in an abandoned building outside of town but eventually get lured back. With a giant, glowing cross spearing the front of their Toyota, they take the town on and battle Czakyr.

    2) That reminds me of a scene with a dog that incubates an Alien in “Alien 3″ (1992). It hides in ventilation shafts, with huge fans going, where the Alien bursts out of it in the form of a freakish-looking canine. That’s the only movie that comes to mind.

    4) This is another wild guess:
    From Beyond (1986)
starring Jeffrey Combs, Barbara Crampton, Ken Foree, Ted Sorel, Carolyn Purdy-Gordon
    IMDb synopsis:
Dr. Pretorius and his colleagues are working on a sensational experiment: by means of stimulation of the pineal gland. They want to open the human mind to higher dimensions. When the experiment succeeds, they are immediately attacked by terrible lifeforms which apparently are floating around us all of the time. When Pretorius is killed by one of them, Dr. Tillinghast is a suspect and is thrown into the psycho ward due to his stories. Only the ambitious psychologist Dr. McMichaels believes him and wants to continue the experiment.

    5) The Granny (1995)
starring Stella Stevens as Granny, Shannon Whirry, Luca Bercovici (writer/director)
    IMDb synopsis:
Granny’s family wants her dead so they can collect her insurance. While she is on her death bed, she drinks an eternal life potion and returns to the land of the living. She is on a mission to wreak havoc over her greedy relatives.

I don’t have any guesses for the other two. I admit that I don’t watch a lot of zombie movies when they became so repetitive and nothing like traditional zombies of folklore.

    horror movie help????????????????????
okay this is all i remember from these 6 movies. ;) it”s not alot of description for this is all i remember.

    1. one of them is a vampire.
all i remember is that a vampire male is i think in a basement with a female. and the Vampire has large fangs that i think passes his chin. the female throws water at him and he becomes human again. something like that.. i think that’s her dad or husband or something. i don’t know if he melted or become a human again, but i remember his fangs that large, i remember the water scene (don’t know if it’s holy water), but he became good again.

    2. the other movie is about a Dog.
The dog went into a room, with large fans or large Fan. the Fan blew his skin off. the Dog stood there untill everything was just Meat. The dog went back to where it was, and started attacking people, don’t know if it attacked it’s owner. but i remember the guy having a shotgun I think, i think there were other people in there, and if they were other people in there, i think they had shotguns too. not sure, but all i remember is that dog’s skin flying off from the Fan. and the Dog attacking people while the skin was off, and all you could see is Meat, Blood.

    3. the other movie (not sure if it’s a horror) but a Woman or girl was outside pooping, and her anus was all bloody from pushing.. and i think her dad was helping her push, or husband or boyfriend. Then she finally pooped. not sure if it was poop, or a vessel or a small item or a small coccone, but i remember it being poop. I remember my dad watching it and kicked me out. i was little back then. ;)

    4. the other movie is about.
a women had a cigarette and burned some guys face and then his face became a skull. then his skull i think feel and she stepped on it. there was fire around them i believe. i think in the same movie a guy was in a labatory i think and he was laying down and a worm came out of his stomach. it was no ordinary worm, it had eyes and teeth. i think he had the tv on next to him. not sure if someone shot the tv, if they did, i think the tv was aware of it. not sure about this one here though, don’t know if it’s the same movie.

    5. a grandma had a cat, and the cat took some potion, which made it i think inside out. and the grandma took it and killed her. next thing you know hat her wake, some midget woman and her boyfriend tried to cut dead granny’s finger off to take her ring, and then she came back from the dead and killed them. during that, she killed practically her family in the house, her i think granddaughter, nephew, and stuff, but it delth is her other grandaughter that was taking care of her. she was the hero in this movie. not a zombie like grandma but a demonic dead grandma who can still talk/think. don’t know about her cat, but all i know it was insided out.

    6. not sure about this one though. i think it was the 80′s or 90′s. this is lame, but this is all i remember. a man or woman ran into a small shed in the farm i think and there was i think a zombie in there. ????? or a zombie tried to get in. but i think it was a man in there by himself when the zombie appeared. i don’t know how many zombie movies has this kind of scene. i know returned of the living dead franchise does not have this scene, i know day/dawn/night of the living dead does not have this scene. i know CHUD 2 : Bud the chud does not have this scene.

my kitten will not stop peeing on things help!!!!!!?
I got a kitten from a farm about 2 months ago, Im not sure how old she is but she was very small when we got her. She was very sick with worms, fleas, lice, ear mites, and a stomach virus. We took care of all of this but she started peeing on things slowly. first a towel, then bed then other things. we have a male cat but they get along good. We got 2 litter boxes and we put the kitten in a room at night and when we are away but she just started peeing in there too. she uses the litter box most the time (our vet dose not think she has a uti) but randomly she pees places. We are moving and i am very close to giving her to a shelter. I love her very much so this would break my heart but i cant stand it. Is this something that she may grow out of, or will it go away when we get her fixed? any ideas? PLEASE HELP!

She also has a very very strong obsession with sucking on peoples fingers, its like an addiction. i dont know if this is related?

Go to an anglers shop. You should be able to get hold of some tiger worms. These are the ones to use. Place damp newspapers on the bottom of the bin, put worms on paper and cover with soil. Put in any organic kitchen waste eg.any veg peelings, egg shells, tea leaves, in other words anything that will rot down. Also put your bin on bricks, make a few holes in the bottom and place a bowl there. The liquid that drips off makes an excellent fertiliser when diluted, good luck !
